Kimi?

Turun Sanomat:kimi

Vettel:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:

Turun Sanomat:Monza

TS-SPECIAL
Turun Sanomat, Shanghai
HEIKKI KULTA

It's easier for Vettel to win a GP than to win Kimi in badminton
Vettel had time to come to a special interview by Turun Sanomat even though Toro Rosso had cancelled all private interviews afer the Italian GP.

When Toro Rosso informed at Fuji that Vettel is only available for general interviews the young driver went in between, tapped the TS interviewer on the shoulder and said he will make an exception now.

Vettel Is Kimi's friend, kindred spirit and play mate. He likes Finland and Finnish people so much that he spent the first summer break in August by driving through our country. Therefore TS got this exclusive 15-minute interview with him.

Which one is harder - to win a GP or Kimi in Badminton?
- I have won a GP but not yet Kimi in badminton. I promised Kimi that I will win him one day. We will both get older. I'm 8 years younger than him so at least when he is really old and I'm just a younger old man I'll beat him in that game.
- Although I do train hard so that I might do it already after 2-3 months or at least during the next year, Vettel says.

Räikkönen brags among his friends that Vettel doesn't score more than 5 points when he plays with him?
- If I play a good game I get more than 5 points against him, Vettel corrects.

The Finn does many sports. What about Vettel?
- We like the same things with Kimi but golf isn't really my thing. And I can't skate. Icehockey isn't a big sport in Germany, that's why I've never been interested in it. All Germans play football and I do that too. Although the most favourable sports are those, which include an engine, Vettel said.

Records are just statistics

Vettel made Kimi's dreams true by winning the pole and the GP as the youngest ever. He also has time to become the most youngest WDC.

How young do you think it's possible for a F1-driver to be successful and make records like these?
- They are just statistics. I know that some day there will come an even younger driver along who breaks these statistics. I don't think age is the crucial criteria. It all depends on how much experience a driver has had time to get before reaching a certain age before you can reach the F1-level.
- If we would be compared to drivers 20-30 years ago, the drivers are younger now because they control these cars more perfectly at a younger age. Take Kimi for an example. I remember how young he was when he came to F1 straight from Formula Renault. That was really special.
- Everybody has a chance to do karting at an even younger age than before. You can race at 7-8. Earlier you started when you were 12-15. It explains why F1-drivers these days are younger.
- But it's no use to stare at the age. If you're good enough and fast enough you earn your salary. It doesn't matter if you're 38 or even 41 years old, if you still are fast enough and give it your everything, then you're not too old. It depends more on the personality than the physical age, Vettel assures.

The feeling of victory means the most
You get in your first GP one point younger than anyone else when you were driving in the Us GP instead of Robert Kubica. How much did it mean to you?
- It only made the statistics more beautiful. Of course it was a nice thing when you scored a point from your first race but for me it was more important to get the point than to achieve the record as the youngest driver. The same with Monza. I was happy for the victory, not that it happened to me as the youngest driver.
How much did the success in Monza change your life?
- Not at all -- 0,000 percent. I'm the same Sebastian, and I can't understand why it should have changed me in any way. I just love racing just as much as always.

Kimi's straightforwardness is what Vettel likes

Vettel lives in Wachwilissä Sveitsissä. The distance to Kimi's home is 35 km.

- I spend a very limited time at home. F1-drivers travel a lot and practically all the time. It's always nice to come home when it's so quiet and peaceful. I come from a small town in Germany. I like the big metropols but I enjoy only one day there. After that I'd rather go to a peaceful place.

- I'm happy that Kimi lives nearby. He is a great guy. I like him a lot because he is always a honest and open guy. Many says they don't like Kimi because of the way he is. But Kimi can also be very funny. He is always the same and doesn't treat you in a different way. No matter who you are. Kimi never goes around things, he says what he thinks.

- We have a great relationship although we havent' had much time and we don't meet every day. We are in different teams and we have different pr-stuff.

About Finland and vocabulary

Vettel speaks 4 languages - German, English, a little French and a little Italian - and has learned a few Finnish words from Kimi. Moi, kiitos, mitä kuuluu and a couple of words that can't be printed.

- I was in Finland in August and liked it a lot. I'm not a beach lion so it didn't matter that it wasn't so warm. I just drove around with the car. Finland is a limitless and open country where people are friendly.

Schumacher

You are known as Michael Schumacher's protegé. What is your relationship with him?

- We have a good relationship and we talk the same language literally. We know each other from a very long time. We have raced in the same karting-team and that's how we met for the first time in 1995-1996. Michael has always been Germany's and my idol It's impressive to see what he has accomplished. It's not important that he won so many WDC's, more important is that he lifted the whole F1-sport to a new level.

- One cannot but respect Michael. You saw from him that he never lost his passion for racing after such a long career. Many driver seems to be after 5 years in F1 more bored than Michael after racing for 15 years in F1.

Is the Kerpen track a familiar place to Vettel also?

- I come from 250 km from Kerpen but I often drove there. Sometimes I asked Michael for advice about driving and business. It was always beneficial but I wouldn't talk about any training I would have got from him.

Everything has gone well without a manager

Vettel walks his own road just like Kimi does.

- I have enjoyed for a longer time the support from BMW and Red Bulli. They have taken care of me and I havent had to care about anything else than driving. Every other business has been taken care for me and I have never had a real need to get a manager.

- Now there is no need but maybe later. I don't think a manager can only be doing business and take the percentage of the money. A manager also has to be a good friend you can trust by telling everything. I haven't met a guy like that yet.

What kind of a boss is Gerhard Berger, who also took care of his own business during his career without a manager?

- Gerhard is a nice boss. He has a lot of experience. As far as I know he had a wild career when you concentrate on racing, he knows exactly what is talked about. It helps me as a younger driver and it helps also the team's older staff. Gerhard doesn't just come and look as an old F1-driver. He wants to influence and improve the team. Gerhard works hard with Franz Tost and I think they are good together.

Is Toro Rosso like a small Ferrari?

- The team has an Italian mentality and a nice spirit but since I haven't drove for Ferrari I can't compare. We have Ferrari's engine so maybe it combines the teams.

Tired with DNF's

Vettel's beginning was a complete catastroph to a promising driver when four first races where stopped. Sebastian was able to drive all and all only 39 laps in Malesia when he had a DNF.

- And then everything turned around. Of course there's nothing you cand do when someone hits you. The race is over and it's the end of that story. You just have to clear up what happened and then forget it.

- It's never fun when you have to stop the race. You just have to forget about it quickly and think about the next race. If you do everything right but another car hits you, it's just bad luck. Nothing else.

What is your goal for the rest of the season?

- There is no other goal that score more points and do my best in both China and Brazil.

Toro Rosso has 5 points more than Red Bull and the 6th place.

Is the goal to beat the other team?

- I just want to do my best for my own team. When we are ahead of as many teams as possible, the better for Toro Rosso. I just try and score points and don't think about any ranking-situations. Am I on 8th or 9th doesn't matter anything. All that matters is when you are on the top. I'm not interested in being 2nd or 3rd.

More respect

How much can the victory in Monza help Vettel to build his career forward?

- Next year I will be driving for Red Bull. We'll see after that what happens. I see that I have achieved a little more respect among the drivers. I think it's normal when someone succeeds. The only way to get respect is to do well and be fast. You can be a good talker, pretty or rich, in the end it doesn't help if you aren't fast.

- I don't worry too much about these things. I just try and do the best I can in the car and enjoy it, Vettel says.

And it sounds just like Kimi - doesn't it?
